Smadar grew up in Sderot, Israel & performed throughout her high school years. After two years of army service & a year of traveling in Europe as an assist to an opera singer, she moved to New York & began taking acting classes at the Musical Theatre Works School in Manhattan. Smadar has acted in various theatre & film productions in both LA & NY. In 2000 she met Rashid Halial, violinist & singer from Morocco, together they formed a Moroccan trio & performed around the NY area. Through her performances, Smadar met music producer Zeb from Organic Groove, who hired her to sing on various tracks for the record The Spy from Cairo. In 2003, She began working on her 1st record with Shai Bachar who works with Alabina & Greg Wall. This record is a blend of original & traditional material, combining Hebrew, Arabic, & Spanish/Ladino languages. Smadar also collaborated with Tamir Muskat & Emmanuel Mann who both produced & played on the album. In 2004 she joined Yoel ben Simhon & the Sultana Ensemble, a group who represents a unique mix of Judeo Arabic music. She has performed in several special events, including the Interfaith Center Award Ceremony alongside the Iranian singer Sussan Deyhim, honoring the late Ossie Davis & other honorees, & The New Israel fund Organization. After traveling & performing with local Gypsy musicians in Romania, Spain, & Turkey, she found inspiration & today her music is influenced with this sound, incorporating her Middle eastern roots. Smadar performs with her six piece band, composed of professional musicians from Turkey, France, Bulgaria, & Israel performing a Mediterranean Gypsy music in Spanish, Greek, Arabic, & Hebrew of traditional & original music. |
