PHIL ROY

Phil Roy is a veteran Philadelphia - based songwriter whose material has been recorded by Aaron Neville, Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, Pop’s Staples, Widespread Panic, and many others. His first nationally released CD, Issues + Options (Or Music) explores love, hope, faith, and his struggle to come to terms with his own muse. As a successful staff songwriter for several major music publishers, Mr. Roy penned countless songs recorded by renowned performers. At the same time , he was left discouraged by the pressure produce Top 40 hits and felt compelled to write and perform music that was true to himself.
According to The New York Times, singer-songwriter Phil Roy “accomplishes a delicate emotional surgery that countless troubadours have tried but few have been able to carry off. In the most direct language and without irony…[Roy] describes personal experiences of love, loss and spiritual revelation with a naked honesty untainted by narcissism. In one way or another, the songs are touching object lessons in confronting and transcending despair. One of the year's two or three most satisfying albums by an American singer-songwriter.”

"This is Phil Roy at his Phil noir best.
Eccentric, lush + musical.
An atmospheric wicked beauty.
Uncommonly smooth, yet strange and curious.
Enjoy the Roy"
-Tom Waits (Musician)
“An undercurrent of raw melancholy runs through his songs making him a kindred sprit to brooding types like Leonard Cohen, John Martyn, and Peter Gabriel. He often sings in a thoughtful tenor with a back-up of folky guitars, and occasionally he rasps like a haggard rocker, but he’s always full of clear-eyed compassion”.
-Jon Pareles The New York Times
Phil Roy’s "Issues + Options," one of the year’s two or three most satisfying albums by an American singer/songwriter."
-Stephen Holden, The New York Times
As a songwriter, Phil Roy specializes in what you might call a kind of "bleak optimism".
