PETE FRANCIS HEIMBOLD

You might recognize Pete Francis as the lead singer/bassist for the jam band group Dispatch. Untold is his offering into the singer/songwriter genre of music. A quick look at the album would make one think that it would be a straight up pop album comparable to John Mayer & ilk. Yet Francis keeps the album surprisingly fresh throughout & keeps from ever sounding too pop. He is constantly changing musical styles during his eleven song opus. Francis rubs a little funk on the tune Coal Miner, & gets down to a little folk rock with Burning the River. The title track is a beautiful song that could be enjoyed with the company of your lover. Although some of his songs feature too much church-like organ, it doesn't hurt the overall sound of the CD. Lyrically, Francis can be simple at times with lines like, 'One train/ You caught the old man looking/You thought I was insane.' Yet most of his songs hold up & feature deeper lyrics. Since this disc is so musically diverse it can make Francis seem unfocused in his work. Yet this isn't the case, as the singer has managed to craft some fine tunes that break the mold from his Dispatch days. If you are looking for the next General then go try an old Dispatch album. If you are a fan of Jack Johnson & other chilled out musicians, Untold could quickly find frequent rotation in your CD player. By no means is the album anything revolutionary, but rather an admirable first effort from a promising young musician.
