Joe Hurley is a London-bred, Irish-blooded New
Yorker who has performed over 1,000 shows in the USA. He is widely heralded
for both the emotional delivery in his gravel-throated baritone, and his finely-tuned
sense of lyrical detail, through cinematic storytelling that is always poignant,
pure, and very real.“ Joe Hurley is one of New York's most entertaining
frontmen-his distinctive vocals can be raucous as all get-out, and as sorrowful
as a baritone can be”-VILLAGE VOICE
Hurley has released several critically acclaimed albums with his band Rogue's
March, sung duets with folks such as Marianne Faithfull, Sally Timms, Amy Rigby,
Shane MacGowan and Martha Wainwright, performed mainstage on The Warped Tour
and Guinness Fleadhs, and recorded with Tony Visconti , Prefab Sprout and PJ
Harvey.
In addition to national tours(with Cracker and Flogging Molly), Hurley has recently
performed at such prestigious NYC venues as Central Park Summerstage and Lincoln
Center. He and the Gents are now regulars at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater.
Hurley's songs have been placed in numerous feature films, and can be heard
nationally on Sirius Satellite Radio, on several channels including “Sirius
Disorder” .The songs garnering the most airplay on Sirius include “On
My Way Home”, “If I was an Angel”, “Amsterdam Mistress”,
“Not At All” and “Gino's Suitcase”.
Hurley's ballad “Amsterdam Mistress” is featured on the new SONY
release “Whiskey In The Jar: Essential Irish Drinking Songs and Singalongs”
alongside classics from the Pogues, The Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers.
“Amsterdam Mistress” has been called “one of the most evocative
ballads ever penned” by the Irish Voice, and received raves in The New
York Times . The song is performed with an orchestra at the Annual Charity event
'Glen Burtnik's Xmas Xtravaganza' at The New Jersey State Theater, and has been
a staple of DJ Meg Griffin's Christmas show for many years.
Hurley's song “Madcap Tears” has been licensed by Captain Morgan's
Rum for their new TV and Radio ads that begin airing across North America on
Nov 1st.
In recent weeks, Hurley has headlined the Riverside Park Music and Oyster Festival,
opened for the New York Dolls at Hoboken's Annual Free Music Festival, played
with the Beastie Boys, Nellie Mckay, Marshall Crenshaw, and Debbie Harry at
NYC's Animal Rescue benefit , and had four songs placed in the upcoming feature
film 'Four Lane Highway' to be released in April, 2007.'Beautiful Kid', a forthcoming
feature film starring Pulitzer Prize winner Frank McCourt ('Angela's Ashes)
will feature two of Hurley's songs “Shut up and Drink” and 'Amsterdam
Mistress”. “Shut Up and Drink” has been covered by bands in
four different countries. The NY Post wrote, “Rogue's March's 'Shut Up
and Drink' pub hit has become a New York Irish anthem”
Denis Leary, star and writer of the TV hit “Rescue Me”, wrote about
Hurley and the band in New York Magazine. “Rogue's March bash through
a loud, boisterous show. The lead singer, Joe Hurley, stretches his voice to
the point of aneurysm. We toast the IRA. We toast the cease-fire. We toast the
Pope. Fitzy pukes”.
Hurley is a founding member and singer of New York institution The Loser's Lounge,
where he regularly plays to sold-out audiences. The VILLAGE VOICE wrote that
“Hurley is the best singer of vowels in rock since Shane MacGowan, and
he's got fire behind those puppy eyes.”
Hurley's 'Live at Loser's Lounge ' CD has become a big seller, and features
covers of “Maggie Mae”, “Richard Cory”,”Will You
Still Love me Tomorrow”, “Rock and Roll Suicide”, and more.
2005 saw Joe Hurley and The Gents starring in a national TV commercial. The
band played themselves on and off-stage in the 'Fleet Bank Real-Life' ad, which
also starred New York Booking agent Debra Rathwell as herself.
Hurley's Annual event on St Patrick's Day,'The All-Star Irish Rock Revue”,
is now in it's eighth year and has become the most celebrated event of the season,
featuring musical luminaries performing the 'Great Irish Songbook' at NYC's
Bowery Ballroom.
For his next CD, Joe Hurley will be joined by The Gents, a sublime cast of NYC
All-Stars that include James Mastro (Guitar-Ian Hunter, John Cale,), Tony Shanahan(Bassist
in Patti Smith Group), Kenny Margolis( Keys-Cracker), guitarist Chris Flynn,
and a slew of special guests.
The CD will host an eclectic mix of piano ballads, music-hall singalongs, country,
cabaret, and flat-out stinging rock and roll. Several of the CD's songs are
co-writes with Steve Wynn(of Dream Syndicate) and Hurley is also writing with
award-winning novelist Colum McCann. (Oscar-nominated last year for “Everything
in this Country Must' – A Film based on his novel) A song co-written with
legendary producer Tony Visconti is also being considered for the record.
“A wildly diverse act that manages to sew threads of punk, country, and
cabaret into an astonishingly cohesive sound...showcasing a star-powered frontman
in Joe Hurley” --BILLBOARD
“Gritty story-telling-Travels through red-light districts, jail cells,
and one-night stands with the street-savvy swagger of men who have seen it all,
but still feel it most of the time...Hurley has an oddly seductive cigarette-thick
snarl that keeps his wistful ballads rough-While he clearly has the soul of
a streetside confessor, he doesn't waste time on embellishment and pretensions.
If he touches you and you bounce off the walls, so much the better.” -
SAN FRANCISCO WEEKLY
“Songs like 'Shut up and Drink' and 'Amsterdam Mistress' (which rhymes
“pints of guinness” with “lots of slow kisses” ) make
for perfect St Patrick's Day wallowing”
NEW YORK TIMES
“I came away with a new favorite New York band..Rogue's March, whose 'Shut
Up and Drink' is THE surefire party anthem for the end of the 20th century”
AUSTIN CHRONICLE
“Joe Hurley puts his coarse, whiskey-stained trench coat of a vocal through
a strikingly diverse array of story-songs, and somehow succeeds in keeping each
tale distinct and vivid. An ambitious, and quite excellent, disc.” SOUNDVIEWS
“The characters who inhabit London-Irishman's Joe Hurley's songs would
be just as at home in an Elmore Leonard novel....Rogue's March smacks around
punk, country, torch songs, and even a bossa nova with joyful aplomb. Pay special
attention to the rough, poetic imagery of “If I was an Angel” and
“Madcap Tears”.
IRISH AMERICA MAGAZINE
“Joe Hurley's voice sounds like the morning after a good bender on Guinness,
whisky, heartache, and nicotine...and that voice is pure gold. Whether it's
the Kurt Weill-influenced “Bedsheets of Lili Marlene”, the boozy
countrified “The Ghost of her husband-to-be” or the grubby punk
of “On My Way Home”, the colorful characters that spring from Hurley's
head are what give Rogue's March songs their sparkle.” NEW JERSEY RECORD
“Rogue's March are a fantastic band who have managed to capture the same
excitement they create during a show in a tight, raw, studio recording, NEVER
FEAR. This 14 song collection is an exuberant package featuring a heap of memorable
music. They are top players sitting on the edge of the big-time” NEW YORK
