JESS KLEIN
REBECCA FANA

Post-punk, country, soul? This many-sided singer Jess Klein does it all- beautifully. Native New Yorker Jess Klein was in college when she taught herself to play the guitar, using her father's old acoustic. She had already done a little singing & knew how to play the clarinet. In no time at all she was writing songs on her own & performing locally. With some time overseas, & then a move to Boston, Klein turned her full attention toward her musical career. After performing enough to polish her natural skills, Klein recorded her first album, Wishes Well Disguised, in 1998. The debut was independently released and showcases tunes like The Cloud Song, Pressure, and Favorite Shade of Blue. For 2000, Klein put together pop/rock & folk-mixed tracks like Goodbye, Goodbye, Little White Dove, I Tried, and Love Is Where You Find It, to complete a sophomore release titled Draw Them Near, breaking out under the Slow River Records label. Some of the artists who helped out on the recording were producer George Howard, mixer Paul Q. Kolderie, guitarist Will Kimbrough, drummer Ken Coomer, & bassist Brad Jones. Rykodisc, the influential independent label who distributed Klein's Slow River release, signed her to their main label for her next release, the more polished & accessible Strawberry Lover, which was released in 2005; another notable singer-songwriter from Boston, Marc Copely, served as producer & bandleader. In between recording, Klein spends endless time touring, having performed with popular acts like 10,000 Maniacs, Richard Shindell, & Jill Sobule.

Rebecca Fanya is a native New Yorker whose abundant talent, warmth, & charm have made her something of an icon in New York’s downtown musician network. Whether singing backup for Marc Anthony at Madison Square Garden, trilling in Zulu with cast members from The Lion King on Broadway (for the likes of Maya Angelou), laying down studio vocals in front of Harry Belafonte, or tunesmithing in the studio with Grammy winning producer/engineer Benny Faccone, Rebecca’s voice has been heard here, there, & everywhere.
With regular gigs around town, Rebecca’s voice came to be noticed by a wide variety of musical greats. Session calls came from sidemen working with Paul Simon & Bonnie Raitt. Gospel singers in the subway & Harlem soukous bands deepened her sense of rhythm & soul. From salsa fusion bands to South African pop troupes to Jazz pick-up sets & jangling folk-rock demos, Rebecca’s work reflects her passion for the cultural buzz of New York City. And now, not unlike Sheryl Crow once did, Rebecca is ripening her own songwriting & settling into a style uniquely her own -a sweet & worldly folk rock with echoes of Ben Harper, Bonnie Raitt, Peter Gabriel, & Patty Griffin.
Rebecca’s track Paper Airplanes, was chosen to be featured on the benefit album For the Lady alongside Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Avril Lavigne, Natalie Merchant, Bright Eyes, Pearl Jam, & many others. The album was released by Rhino Records & raises awareness for Aung San Suu Kyi, the world’s only imprisoned Nobel Peace Laureate.
Based in Brooklyn, she’s fronting her own band made up of her various touring pals. She captivates audiences with her fearless smile. She conspires with them to bring them into her world. Her lyrics are spare & ring true, & she sings each song as if discovering it for the first time...in that satisfying way that our favorite singers always do.
