Nicole Atkins' music is a blend of the decades & an expression of the images that many of us share in our memories. Both playful & tragic & never cynical. She draws upon the documents left us by heroes such as Roy Orbison, Phil Spector, Nina Simone, The Kinks, & David lynch as much as her own experiences learning from the new heroes like Stephen Malkmus, Wilco, Lucinda Williams ... The result is something that has already led a few journalists into the world of poetic prose in order to capture their experience of her first record entitled Party's Over. Nicole's presence as a performer is very much in tune with the history which her music encapsulates. Songs about adolescence, love, death, & the search for some sense & meaning where they seem hard to find are presented in a birds-eye view, as if we were looking & remembering together.
