An
explosive quartet from Austin,Texas, Gnappy combines the driving funk
sensibilities of Galactic with the trip-jazz moodiness of Medeski, Martin
& Wood, & the hip-hop vibe of Groove Collective. The result- an
enigmatic mixture of psychedelia, bebop, & James Brown -influenced
funk described as 'acid blazz and junk.'
Gnappy features saxophonist Marcus Cardwell (Retarted Elf), guitarist
Buck McKinney (Killing Floor), bassist Chris Grady (Mount Pilot), &
drummer Daniel Jones (Dexter Freebish). The band’s self-titled debut
album, in 2001 on Harlequin Records, has earned high praise, including
'****' -Austin Chronicle; 'A' -IN-Site Magazine; &
favorable reviews in national magazines like Relix & Jazz
Times. Jambase calls Gnappy 'one of the most impressive
of a new generation of acid jazz groups.' Lafayette Daily Advertiser
observes they 'may hail from Austin, but this band is pure New Orleans
jazz-funk, drawing deep from wells sunk by the Meters, the Dirty Dozen,
& Galactic... creating music that is at once smokey & ebullient...
one gets the feeling that the music recorded here is only the tip of this
quartet’s live-performance iceberg.'
