Music Marathon:
MICHAEL LEVITON
THE VILLAGE GREEN
HARTLEY GOLDSTEIN
LAURA MINOR
![]() |
Michael Leviton plays baritone ukulele and sings original love songs. The music was originally intended not for records or performances in smoky bars but for beach serenades in his native California. Dubbed "the Chet Baker of Indie Rock", Leviton is a classic crooner with lyrical and melodic sensibilities right out of Tin Pan Alley, but with a modern skepticism. His tunes warn of sirens who will entice sailors to drown, of the heartbreak that inevitably follows wreckless romance. Michael Leviton's debut album, "My Favorite Place to Drown" came out earlier this year. |
| Named after The Kinks’ classic The Village Green Preservation Society, this rock outfit, duly inspired by the aforementioned, but then perhaps every other groovy thing to have come out of Great Britain between ’66 and ’73, has tuned out and tuned, er… turned off and… oh, bloody hell, turned on most of their Pacific Northwest with stellar shows, packed to gills, tons of good press saying much of what we’re trying to say here (but, better) and some fabulous radio play |

NYC-hailing, acoustic guitar destroying, occasional ukelele carrying, all around man about town, Hartley Goldstein, plays music you will like. Unless you are an asshole, which in that case you will probably not like his music. Time Out NY said this about Hartley’s debut EP, Songs In The Key Of Zoloft: 'Whimsical, self-conscious pop with ridiculously clever lyrics that sounds like it was plucked from an 80's college radio playlist. Hooray!' Cool. Also, the fine folks at New York called him, 'The David Sedaris of Indie Rock.' Goldstein was amused by this piece of press, & wants to kindly remind the public that, though, he may be witty, he is not Gay. Currently Hartley is working on his debut full-length titled, The Narcissist & Other Songs About Me, with producer Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo). |
| Laura Minor made a record with dälek & it came out a psychedelic/punch-drunk/ crooner-country heartbreaker with heavy dub bass lines, cosmic soundscapes, ambient choirs, & lyrical smarts. Xlr8tr wrote in the issue, 'Laura Minor, on the other hand, is the future. The Florida native's Let Evening Come is like My Bloody Valentine meets Lucinda Williams; a pretty blend of shoegazer country. Produced by hip-hop crew dälek, whose dark beats augment Minor's pristine voice, the excellent album is both soulful & haunting.' The new record features guest appearances by Eric Bachmann& members of dälek, Crooked Fingers, Soldiers of Fortune, Clay Cook & the Torches, Jett Brando, & the Mercury Program. This debut solo record is an oceanic departure for Minor. It is layered with a wide range of influences including Sparklehorse, MBV, Jolie Holland, Mojave 3, Mazzy Star, Tom Petty, Velvet Underground, & Burt Bacharach. |
