SANDY STONES
Ben Schaefer (Rochester), Jeff Straker (Toronto), and Sandy Stones (New York): 3 singer-songwriters ‘in the round.' Ben and Jeff are touring the Northeast US on their “Saskatunes Tour” and Sandy joins the lads for this special show! The boys have a penchant for Joni Mitchell and stole the name from her. The Canadian city of Saskatoon (Joni stole the name from there) is also Jeff’s home-land. You following? They all pen an excellent tune and could sing the phone book well if you asked them. A few words on each!:

Due to studying Literature and Writing in the Hudson valley, Ben’s music tends to pursue a literary vein- he aims to write a story, a narrative, and to sing it as poetically as possible. This often results in his tendency to invent words and grammar and to use creative pronunciation. His music is constructed around the guitar, piano and mountain dulcimer, and is reminiscent of the sixties folk circuit of Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison, as well as current folk musicians such as Anais Mitchell and Devon Sproule, with whom he had the pleasure to perform. This past summer he partook in the New York Songwriters Showcase, and has played venues such as the notable Bitter End and Cb’s Gallery. |
The Canadian in the trio. Jeff has been touring his album “Songs from Highway 15” this year. He’s done over 100 shows crossing Canada, and also hitting New York and in Panama via support from the Canadian Embassy. He recorded a performance “Live at the CBC” with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation – (think PBS with maple leaves) which aired several times this fall. His album and tour are supported by the Foundation to Assist Canadian talent on Records, and he says ‘eh?’ a lot in his sets to remind everyone about that. He also pronounces the word about, ‘aboot’ to please his American friends. A little Elton John, a little Rufus Wainwright and a little Ben Folds is how he’s described. |
