ASHA PUTHLI

Asha Puthli is the original Indian diva of jazz, funk, & soul. Legendary for her sultry, four-octave soprano voice, she is one of the most successful vocalists ever to come out of India. Jazz fans exalt her legendary vocals on the Science Fiction album by Ornette Coleman, for which she was awarded the highly prestigious Downbeat Critics' Poll award for 'best female jazz vocalist.' Sampled by the likes of The Notorious BIG, P Diddy, Jay-Z, The Neptunes, 50 Cent, Diplo, Dilated Peoples, & many more, Asha's chilled out underground soul & funk records of the 1970s are currently being rediscovered by legions of hip-hop, neo-soul, nu-jazz, & electronica fans. In 2006, she appears on Bill Laswell's Asana OHM Shanti, an album that also features Karsh Kale, Pharaoh Sanders, Grandmaster DXT, & Ustad Sultan Khan. New York Times critic Robert Palmer praised about Asha's sound: 'A sound like Raga meeting Aretha Franklin... [Asha Puthli is] a master performer.' |
